A wind chill advisory is in effect as dangerously low temperatures are expected to develop across St. Lawrence County the remainder of the week and into the weekend with temps 20 below zero possible, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Very cold wind chills are likely which will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes if skin is exposed to the elements, forecasters say.
Expect wind chills to range from 15 to 25 below zero late tonight and throughout the day on Wednesday, the service says.
This will be the start of a prolonged stretch of brutally cold temperatures, with even more dangerous wind chill conditions developing Wednesday night and Thursday, NWS says.
A wind chill advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills.
Frost bite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. When venturing outdoors, limit areas of exposed skin. Make sure to wear a hat and gloves.
The high today will be near 14 with wind chill values around zero. Overnight lows will be around -6 with wind chill values of -15, NWS says.
Temperatures are not expected to be above zero again until Sunday; which will see a high of 1 degree, forecasters say.
