NORWOOD -- 17th Annual Norwood Beach Duathlon Series races will be held on Tuesdays, June 21, July 5, July 26, and Aug. 2.

The original announcement of this year’s series had the first race on June 14, but that has been changed to avoid a conflict with the first event in this year’s Summer Sunset Series in Canton.

The Norwood Beach race series consists of four contests each with a 1.5 mile run, an eight-mile bike, and another 1.5 mile run from Norwood Beach, Lake Shore Drive.

Registration starts at 5:30 p.m., and races start at 6:30

The cost: is $3 per race per person, or $10 for the series (includes a T-shirt given at the first race).

Under 18 participants need a parent’s or guardian’s signature. Helmets are required.

The series is sponsored by the Norwood-Norfolk Central School Language Club and the Norwood Village Recreation Department.

For more information call Mike diVincenzo at 353-2849.

The duathlon is a sport that has gained popularity in recent years. 2011 is the 17th year this race has been run at the Norwood Beach. Whether you are a serious cyclist or runner or an average recreational athlete, you can enjoy this time trial which includes biking and running. The duathlon is used by some as a training tool to sharpen their skills. To others it offers the personal challenge of developing skills and fitness in two different activities.

To keep the duathlon an enjoyable and safe event for every type of athlete, you are asked to observe the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Laws and the rules governing this event. In addition, please extend every courtesy to other cyclists, runners, pedestrians and motorists who also use the road. We have people and sometimes Norwood Village Police out at the major intersections to help with traffic safety. It is still up to you the racer to be responsible for your safety and that of your fellow racers.
