Firearms, hunting manufacturers applaud Rep. Owens for co-sponsoring Shooting Protection Act of 2011

The trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and recreational shooting industry has applauded Rep. William Owens for co-sponsoring the Hunting, Fishing, and Recreational Shooting Protection Act of 2011.

Also known as H.R. 1558, the legislation would amend a previous bill that clarifies the jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency over ammunition.

“H.R. 1558 would help protect traditional ammunition (containing lead-core components) from continuing attacks by anti-hunting groups who seek to ban ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976,” said Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in a letter to the Plattsburgh Congressman.

Owens, a Democrat, represents the North Country’s 23rd Congressional District.

“This bill will continue to ensure that America’s hunters and shooters can choose for themselves the best ammunition to use, instead of unnecessarily mandating the universal use of expensive alternatives,” said NSSF Pres. Stephen L. Sanetti.

“This legislation will also help to protect and strengthen our companies throughout the firearms and ammunition industry,” Keane’s letter to Owens continues. “The bill would result in solidifying wildlife conservation funding through the Pittman Robertson Trust Fund, thereby benefiting sportsmen throughout the country. The partnership developed over time between the firearm and ammunition industry and the conservation community is paramount to our mission.
