An earthquake centered in Quebec rattled parts of the North Country this afternoon.
"My house shook pretty good in Massena walking both dogs and getting them barking for awhile, but I could feel the floor shaking for awhile pretty good," said Gary Trippany of Massena.
He said he felt shaking at about 1:37 p.m. and that his house shook for about 45 seconds.
The quake was reported in the Potsdam and Canton areas.
The U.S. Geological Survey earthquakes web page at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/ reports the small earthquake was recorded in the vicinity of Ottawa today, rated at above magnitude 3.
The site shows a magnitude 3.7 quake recorded at 17:36:56 Greenwich Mean Time, or just about when Trippany says he felt shaking.
The USGS plots the epicenter of the quake at latitude 45.571N and longitude 74.547W, 29 miles west-southwest of Mirabel, Quebec, with the actual fracture about 5.3 kilometers or 3 miles under the surface.
