POTSDAM -- Some south Potsdam residents were without power for more than three hours this morning after a driver allegedly sheared off a utility pole and left the scene, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies.
David L. Costa, 23, 126 Anderson Rd., Potsdam, was arrested early today following the crash at the intersection of County Rt. 59 and the South Canton Road.
Deputies investigated after receiveing a call about the broken pole and located Costa in the area. Costa admitted to hitting the pole with his vehicle and leaving the scene, according to deputies.
Costa was placed under arrest by deputies who measured his blood alcohol level at .20 percent, more than twice the minimum level for driving while intoxicated.
Costa was charged with aggravated DWI, failure to keep right, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. His tickets are returnable in Town of Potsdam Court on Dec. 23.
Area residents were without power for about three hours this morning while National Grid workers and at least a half dozen National Grid vehicles replaced the pole and repaired the damage.
