St. Lawrence County local law enforcement agencies will aggressively target drunk drivers during the upcoming Halloween holiday period, according to the STOP-DWI program.

The effort is the latest statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown, which runs from Oct. 28 through Oct. 31, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

During the crackdown, law enforcement statewide will be stepping up patrols and scheduling sobriety road checks, according to a news release from STOP-DWI.

“Drinking/drugging and driving anytime is a big mistake, but doing so at a time when we know the streets will be filled with families is a risk nobody should accept. This is reckless behavior and local, county and state law enforcement in this county will aggressively work together to locate those who make this bad choice,” said Sheriff Kevin M. Wells.

"Adult Halloween parties have grown in popularity in recent years and many of these include the consumption of alcohol and the potential for impaired driving. This presents an obvious risk to families who take to the streets as pedestrians on the same evening," the release says. "Nationally in 2015, over half (52%) of all highway fatalities across the nation on Halloween night (6 p.m. Oct. 31 to 5:59 a.m. Nov. 1) involved a driver or a motorcycle rider with a BAC of .08 or higher. Therefore, law enforcement officials and traffic safety advocates are taking the matter with great seriousness."
