WADDINGTON -- St. Lawrence County sheriff’s detectives have made an arrest in a store robbery from 2012.
On June 14, 2012, St. Lawrence County detectives, deputies, state police and members of the U.S. Border Patrol responded to a reported strong-armed robbery at the Kunoco Foot Mart in the Town of Waddington.
At the time, the suspect described as a white male dressed in a black colored hoody and ski mask had taken $400 dollars in cash and was confronted by the female employee.
A physical struggle ensued and the suspect, who police now believe is Paquin, had bitten the female victim in the arm and had kicked her in the ribs, police said.
Detectives had collected a DNA sample from the victim’s bite mark. The sample was analyzed and a “John Doe” DNA profile was extracted and stored with the assistance of the New York State Police Crime Lab in Albany. The victim was treated at a local hospital and released. Over the next several months, all leads had been exhausted, according to police.
In the fall of 2016, investigators determined that some of the people of interest had DNA samples on file and some did not. Police found out that Paquin, who was a person of interest, had been convicted of an unrelated crime after the date of the robbery and his DNA was not yet on file. With the assistance of state police in Latham, investigators were able to locate and obtain a sample from Paquin as it was previously court ordered, police said.
“Upon the testing of that sample it was determined that the DNA sample provided by Paquin was an exact match of the person who had bitten the victim in the robbery that occurred in 2012,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Paquin was arrested Friday morning in Latham on a on an arrest warrant and is being held in the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with no bail, police said.
He is due back in St. Lawrence County Court next week to answer the indictment that is filed against him, according to police.
Detectives were assisted by members of the State Police, St. Lawrence County District Attorney Investigator Daniel Manor Sr. and Assistant District Attorney Joshua Haberkornhalm.
