MASSENA -- Despite the objections of one trustee, the Board of Education voted to approve a new testing misconduct and mandatory reporting policy that puts them in line with what Superintendent of Schools William Flynn says the state Department of Education wants on the books.

It governs handling a school employee who helps students cheat on tests and requires district employees to report any knowledge of such conduct.

It passed by a 6-1 vote, with Trustee Loren Fountaine dissenting.

"I don't understand this policy. It makes no sense," Fountaine said.

Flynn noted that it isn't mandated that they pass it.

"I hear you on that. It's a policy that says 'I agree to follow state law,'" Board President John Boyce said. "The more you take control of it, the less need is seen by the state for them to step in."

Trustee William Somerfield credited Board Vice President Ron Faucher with doing the research and writing the policy, which otherwise may have cost money to hire someone.

The policy can be read click here.
