Department of Conservation warns of parking problems at trailheads for Memorial Weekend

Posted

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is warning people in the North Country that, due to the Memorial Day Weekend, trailheads parking areas and campsite will fill early.

The DEC says visitors to trails and parks should expect to encounter many people on trails and waterways. They advise people to plan accordingly and seek outdoor recreational opportunities in other less used state recreation areas in the North Country.

Those who are camping are reminded that the state firewood regulations are still in effect. Treated firewood may contain invasive pests that kill trees, and to protect New York’s forests, it may not be moved more than 50 miles from its source or origin.

There is more on the regulations at https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/28722.html.

And they have other warnings and items of advice regarding biting insects.

The Bug Season has begun. Black flies and mosquitoes are active. Follow these steps to minimize the nuisance of biting insects:

• Wear light colored clothing.

• Wear long sleeve shirts; tuck shirts into pants and button or rubber band sleeves at the wrist.

• Wear long pants and tuck the bottom of pant legs into your socks.

• Pack a headnet to wear when insects are thick.

• Use an insect repellant with DEET, and follow label directions.
