Demolition of 421 Park St. in Ogdensburg could begin next week; cost estimated at $27,900

OGDENSBURG -- Richardson & Sons are expected to begin demolition work soon on a burned out structure at 421 Park Street.

Ogdensburg awarded a contract to demolish the fire-damaged structure in August. The project is expected to cost the city $27,790.

Richardson & Son will receive $10,200.

Materials will be transported from the site by Tater Acres at an estimated cost of $2,400.

Because the site may contain asbestos materials, air monitoring must be performed during demolition, which will be performed by David Cole at a rate of $600 per day.

Disposal of materials is expected to cost more than $13,000.

The contractor has posted a 10-day asbestos project notification and won’t be able to begin the work until Oct. 24, which is expected to take up to five days.

Ogdensburg City Council is hoping to demolish other blighted properties in the city as well.

The city is seeking a $500,000 Restore NY grant to fund the demolition of condemned city-owned properties.

The grant would require a 10 percent match from the city, which Comptroller Tim Johnson says could come from community development funds. Deputy Mayor Michael Morley pointed out that would deplete those funds, but Johnson said it’s possible other funding could be used to offset the cost. He also said there is a fair chance Ogdensburg won’t receive the entire $500,000. If that happens the match could be less than the $50,000 estimate.

According to the resolution the funding would be used to demolish a 29,820 square foot commercial property at 17 Main Street, a 62,176 square foot vacant residential property at 420 Lafayette Street, and a 73,920 square foot condemned commercial property at 212 Ford Street.
