DEKALB JUNCTION – A 15-year-old type 1 diabetic is organizing numerous events to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Devin Edward, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age eight, recently received a “Hero Award” from JDRF for his team's efforts. In the past six years, he has had to prick his finger over 13,000 times and had almost that many shots of insulin.

Edward is captain of “The Cure-iers” walk team that raised $100 for JDRF Sunday during a car wash at the Ogdensburg Fire Department.

But the team’s efforts don't stop there.

Edward recently approached Aaron Reardon of Gamer Craze, at the corner of Hodskin and Main streets in Canton, about a benefit tournament. Reardon agreed and procured the help of Lucas and Sarah Manning of The Partridge Café in the Mid-Town Plaza to provide a larger venue to host the event.

The event, a Magic: The Gathering Pre-Release Tournament, will take place Saturday, July 9. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. for the all-day tournament with space to seat up to 90 people. A portion of each $25 entry fee will go to JDRF to benefit the Cure for Diabetes.

The tournament type is called Sealed Deck. As part of the $25 entry fee, each player gets six packs of booster cards and uses them to make a 40-card deck with which to compete.

The Partridge Cafe will have food and drinks available to buy throughout the day.

Members of The Cure-iers Walk team will be available to accept further cash or check donations, raffle prize donations, and to purchase raffle tickets from at the event.

In the future, Edwards hopes to organize a concert, art auction, raffle drawing, bake sale and more to raise more money for Diabetes research.

Meanwhile, as a type 1 diabetic, Edwards has already suffered complications such as lowered immunity, Diabetic Keto Acidosis, lack of stamina, depression, anxiety and painful neuropathy. He still risks seizures, loss of consciousness, coma, brain damage, loss of limbs, blindness and death.

The team has a website, TheCure-iers.weebly.com.
