Defending state champions from Heuvelton advance to girls basketball finals with 59-45 win

TROY - Defending New York State Class D Champions Heuvelton Central School punched its way into the championship game on Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College with a 59-45 win over Eldred of Section 9 in the New York State Public High School Association Semi-Final contest.

"I'm just so excited for my teammates and I that we get a chance to play for another championship." said senior captain Nathalie Barr.

Heuvelton Coach Rob Powers said the second half was the big difference.

"We played a good first quarter and I thought Eldred became tired in the fourth quarter. We were able to set the tempo and find some seems in the defense. Paige McCormick took over in the second half. Madison McCormick hit a big three and Nathalie (Barr) played awesome for four quarters and provided excellent leadership," Powers said.Heuvelton found themselves down 26-22 at halftime after a buzzer beating three from Eldred at halftime."Coach Powers just said play like we did in the first quarter and work hard. We did," said Alex Steele. Paige McCormick scored 19 of hergame high 29 in the second half going nine of 10 at the foul-line. She posted 15 rebounds and two steals.

Madison McCormick finished with eight points and six rebounds including a three pointer late 4:20 left in the fourth quarter 50 to 43 lead.

Barr had 16 points going eight for 11 from the field and posted five steals. three rebounds and two assists.Steele posted six boards.For Eldred, Jordan Lopes had 19 and Kelsey Collins added 12 points and 14 rebounds.Heuvelton plays Panama on Sunday at 10 a.m.
