DEC plan for Cranberry Lake Campground calls for road paving, new water lines, electrical system upgrade

CRANBERRY LAKE – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has a final plan for the Cranberry Lake Campground that includes paving of roads, new waterway access, new water lines and a new equipment garage.

The Unit Management Plan (UMP), which is now available to the public, will guide the future management of the campground over the next five years. “The surrounding area is a haven for outdoor recreationists and is well known for its excellent hunting, fishing and hiking opportunities,” said DEC Region 6 Director Judy Drabicki. “In fact, 2,795 people visited Cranberry Lake Campground in 2015 during the recreational season of May to October,”.

Cranberry Lake Campground, at 243 Lone Pine Road, is located in the western part of the Adirondack Park on the northeastern shore of Cranberry Lake, the third-largest body of water in the park. Approximately three-quarters of Cranberry Lake’s shoreline is bounded by Forest Preserve.

The UMP contains an inventory of facilities, systems and resources at the campground.

When funding becomes available, DEC management proposes in the UMP to

• pave campground loop roads

• construct a waterway access site

• replace water lines

• build an equipment garage

• upgrade the electrical system

• build an additional dump station

• install utility sinks

• restore campsites

The campground is adjacent to a 14,452-acre parcel of the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest, while a 7,149-acre parcel of this forest lies on the western shore, and the 129,000-plus acre Five Ponds Wilderness Area lies on the southern shore.

General information on the campground is at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24460.html.
