The Youth Conservation Corps is kicking off its 35th year in St. Lawrence County this summer.
Employing young adults from ages 14 to 21, the program gives adolescents a memorable work experience. Those employed by YCC, work to conserve the environment and address unmet needs of St. Lawrence County.
The YCC employees will work three days a week until Aug. 10 with unique work experience each day. They conserve the environment and gain work experience and hands-on skills that may benefit them in their future careers.
YCC tasks range from garbage pickup to maintenance and clearing of trails on state and county lands.
Each year, the YCC program also helps to restore and conserve the Mt. Arab Fire Tower and trail leading to the tower. The hike allows crews to interact and learn about the conservation efforts of the program.
Funded by numerous grants, YCC employees are engaged with various types of work. Joanne Sevick, Youth Bureau Director, seeks grants for the program.
