MASSENA -- Village police say a rumor circulating on social media that one of the two escaped Clinton Correctional Facility convicts was spotted at On A Roll Deli is bogus.
“We looked into it and it was unfounded,” Dispatcher Rebecca Caruso said.
They received the report Monday afternoon that one of the two escapees was spotted three days ago.
Caruso deferred further comment to Chief Mark LaBrake, who was gone for the day.
The New York State Police say they continue to search for escapees David Sweat, 35, and Richard Matt, 48 in the area around the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.
The pair broke out sometime around June 6 using power tools.
The area around state Route 374 remains the focus of the search, and the road will remain closed between General Leroy Manor Road and Rand Hill Road through at least Tuesday, troopers said.
As of Monday, more than 800 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies are assisting in this search. Investigators will continue to search door-to-door, troopers said.
Officers and forest rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, as well as officers from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, FBI, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Clinton, Franklin and Essex County sheriff departments and the Plattsburgh Police Department have searched over 13 square miles (8,300 acres) to date.
“All available assets continue to be deployed around the clock, including K9 and aviation units. More than 1,000 leads have been developed at this point in the investigation,” New York State Police Director of Public Information Beau Duffy said in a prepared statement released Monday afternoon.
Troopers say the public should not hesitate to report any suspicious activity, that includes any sign of a trespass, burglary or vehicle larceny.
They say people can contact 911, a local law enforcement agency, or the New York State Police to report any information related to this investigation at (518) 563-3761 or 1-800-GIVETIP.
