POTSDAM --- Interior work is progressing on the new suite of physical rehabilitation examination and treatment areas at Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s new Lawrence Avenue Medical Campus.

The rehab program is expected to move before year’s end from downtown Clarkson Hall to the 49 Lawrence Ave. medical complex

In the new occupational therapy treatment facility, certified occupational therapists will assist patients in private simulation areas to re-learn activities of daily living connected to an occupation or just to getting out of bed and getting dressed in the morning. An demonstration bathtub and shower stall combination will help patients in visualizing the proper installation of grab-bars, and will give them practice in their proper use in a setup that would be typical of most patients’ homes.

The occupational therapy area includes a fully stocked and functioning kitchen, office work space, and other spaces helping to simulate activities of daily living. These simulations help patients regain function following an injury or surgery.

The new facility will include other equipment that supports the full range of comprehensive physical rehabilitation services provided by the Physical Therapy Department.

Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s physical rehabilitation team includes certified physical and occupational therapists, physical therapy aides, and speech therapy services. The team maintains specialist certification in orthopedics and sports medicine, lymphedema therapy—often used for patients recovering from breast cancer treatment—and geriatrics.

Physical therapy services are available in Canton at the E. J. Noble Medical Building; physical, occupational, and speech therapy are available in Potsdam beginning in January at the Lawrence Avenue Medical Campus.

For an appointment in Canton, patients may call 261-5490, or for Potsdam, 261-5460.
