COLTON -- The Colton United Methodist Church will begin steeple restoration work in August, and seeks financial help.
The building, which sits sedately on a hill in the foothills of the Adirondacks, was erected in 1852 to create a house of worship for those in the growing community.
In 1859 a bell from Troy was placed in the steeple of the church and could be heard from afar, calling people in the countryside to the church for service.
Age has taken a toll as the steeple roof needs repair and the bell supports are broken and must be replaced.
Restoration work is set to begin Aug. 8.
The Colton UMC embarked on a project initiative called "Save the Steeple." They held many fundraising events, but still need financial assistance to complete the restoration.
