He has years of experience as an accomplished finance officer for public higher education institutions, according to a press release from the college.

"I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity to work at SUNY Potsdam. It is truly a welcoming environment. I appreciate the confidence that President Esterberg has in my abilities and I look forward to providing leadership and direction for the campus, as we work to strengthen SUNY Potsdam's financial position," Johnston-Ortiz said.

He has also held chief financial officer roles at the University of Minnesota Crookston and at New Mexico State University Alamogordo. Prior to that, Johnston-Ortiz was the director of finance and administration at the Alliance for Higher Education, and an administrator and business manager at Brown University and the Louisiana State University Health Science Centers in Shreveport and New Orleans.
