High winds that are blowing into St. Lawrence County from Lake Ontario will reach us Sunday afternoon, blowing from the southwest at 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph, the National Weather Service warns.
Meanwhile forecasters have posted a hazardous weather outlook and a winter weather advisory for the St. Lawrence Valley for mixed precipitation between midnight tonight and 9 a.m. Sunday.
Precipitation will begin as a mix of snow and sleet before changing to mainly freezing rain early Sunday morning. As surface temperatures rise above freezing, plain rain is expected by mid-morning Sunday. The NWS days drivers should plan on slippery road conditions.
Today, it will remain fairly warm with highs nearing 40 degrees under cloudy skies.
Overnight, snow and freezing rain are expected to turn to snow, freezing rain and sleet with lows around 28. Little or no accumulation is predicted.
Sunday, highs will approach 50 degrees with rain for most of the day. Winds will pick up in the afternoon, eventually reaching their peak Sunday night. Rain and snow showers will turn to mainly snow Sunday night with lows in the low 20s.
Snow is predicted to continue on Monday morning with little accumulation, then temperatures will climb into the mid 20s, forecasters say.
The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:
• Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the afternoon.
• Tonight: A slight chance of snow and freezing rain before midnight, then a chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet between midnight and 2am, then rain after 2am. Low around 28. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.
• Sunday: Rain before noon, then showers, mainly after noon. High near 49. Breezy, with a southeast wind 13 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
• Sunday Night: Rain and snow showers likely before 7pm, then snow showers. Low around 23. Windy, with a southwest wind 24 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
• Monday: Snow showers likely, mainly before 9am. Cloudy, with a high near 24. Windy, with a west wind 21 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
• Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3. West wind 11 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.
• Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 14. West wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
• Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -1. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph.
• Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon.
• Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3. North wind around 6 mph becoming west after midnight.
• Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 23. West wind 7 to 9 mph.
• Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 6. West wind around 6 mph.
• Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.
