Cloudy skies, rain today, tonight, Sunday in North Country; warm next week

Low pressure over the Great Lakes this morning has pushed a warm front into the North Country today, and then high pressure north of the border sinks southward overnight pushing the front back south as a cold front with periods of showers.

Clouds and some rain are expected in the North Country today and tonight with highs today in the mid 50s and overnight lows near 50 with light winds.

Tonight’s rain could amount to as much as half an inch, the National Weather Service says.

Drizzle is expected Sunday with highs again in the mid 50s and lows in the mid 40s under cloudy skies Sunday night.

It is expected to be cloudy Monday, Columbus Day, with highs be near 60 as a trend toward much warmer temperatures begins.

By Monday night rain is expected to return with lows in the mid 50s, and the cluds will stick around for Tuesday with highs into the 70s.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Isolated sprinkles before 11am, then a chance of showers, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 56. Northeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Tonight: Showers likely before 2am, then patchy drizzle with a chance of showers after 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 48. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Sunday: Areas of drizzle with a chance of showers before 11am, then areas of drizzle between 11am and 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 56. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

• Columbus Day: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Northeast wind around 7 mph.

• Monday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers after 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the evening. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph.

• Tuesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph.

• Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

• Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. East wind around 7 mph.

• Thursday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

• Thursday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. West wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

• Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 59. West wind 9 to 11 mph.
