STAR LAKE – Clifton-Fine principal Rebecca Bascom made a deal with her students in pre-K through 6th grade that if they worked on improving their reading as measured by the STAR Reading Assessment, she would sleep on the roof, and they have done just that.
In September 2017, the students averaged a score of reading at the 34th percentile, said a press release from the school. Each month, the students were able to take a short online assessment that gave them their individual growth that they could see and review with their teacher.
The class averages were calculated and graphed on a chart in the hallway for all to see.
At each monthly 25 Book Campaign Assembly, the results were shared with the students. Since then, they have improved almost 20 percentile points. This is a huge growth in one year and it is all thanks to the hard work of the students and staff, Bascom said.
The students will be able to send Bascom up on the roof rain or shine on June 7 about 8:15.
That evening the school will have their final Family Night from 5-7 where district families will enjoy a pulled pork dinner and wellness events in collaboration with the Clifton Fine Hospital.
At 8:15 p.m., students can watch Bascom read a book on the school’s Facebook page live from the roof.
After Bascom comes down on the morning of the 8th, the elementary students will have a day of celebration: reading in tents, writing in tents, an author visit with James Brachac, Adirondack Raptors for the entire school and an outdoor barbecue.
