UPDATE: Update at 6:07 a.m. to include more details from deputies about the incident.
NORFOLK — A 12-year old who went missing Sunday afternoon was found alive behind his residence in a swamp about 12 hours later, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.
“He is alive and is under the care of medical personnel,” deputies said.
Wayland McGay went missing from his home between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday on Nation Road in the Town of Louisville, officers said. He was found several hundred yards behind his home about 3:49 a.m. by searchers.
McGay was transported by Massena Rescue to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for evaluation, officers said.
Wayland is autistic, has Down syndrome, and is nonverbal, deputies said.
Deputies asked on social media for anyone living in the area to search vehicles, outside buildings and anywhere else that McGay could have accessed.
Also assisting in the search were state police, DEC, Homeland Security and several local fire departments.
