CANTON -- Charges against one driver are pending in the three-car collision Friday on the bridges under construction downtown.
One driver was seriously injured enough to be transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington after first being seen at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
The investigation of the accident will not conclude until that person is well enough to participate in the investigation, according to Canton Police Officer Ashley Coffey.
The cause of the accident has not been officially determined, but Coffey confirmed that eyewitnesses had told her that as a vehicle was exiting the Cascade Inn parking lot it was struck by another vehicle. The third vehicle was damaged after being struck by one of the other vehicles.
We had previously reported that four people were hurt in the accident, but only three were taken to CPH for treatment and a fourth person was uninjured. We regret the error.
The accident occurred at 9:36 a.m. Friday, after the busiest morning traffic period on Main Street, but traffic was significantly tied up downtown for about two hours even more than usual during bridge construction.
The bridge is nearing the end of a months-long rehabilitation that has challenged and frustrated drivers trying to get across the Grasse River at the only crossing for miles around.
