POTSDAM -- Town Councilor and Deputy Supervisor Ann Carvill has been chosen by board members to be the new town supervisor following the recent death of Supervisor Rollin Beattie.

At a Tuesday meeting of the Potsdam Town Council, Carvill first had to resign as a board member before she could take the appointment.

Carvill had been deputy supervisor since the last annual meeting. Councilor Rose Rivezzi, who had been deputy supervisor previously, was chosen to take that position again.

Former town board member James Grant, who resigned as a member of the council last year due to health reasons, was reappointed to the board Tuesday to fill out the membership.

Other council members are long-time councilor Judy Rich and Sarah Lister, elected to the board last November.

And the board made revised committee assignments:

Audit - Rich/Grant and Rivezi/Lister

Safety - Rich, Grant and Highway Superintendent John Keleher, alternate Carvill

Comprehensive Plan - Rivezzi/Rich

Climate Smart - Lister/Rivezzi

Recreation - Rivezzi/Lister, alternate Grant

Infrastructure - Grant/Lister/Keleher, alternate Carvill

Budget - Carvill/Rivezzi.

In other business at the special meeting, the board voted to accept the Health Initiative’s $5,000 grant for Clarkson University to prepare a Complete Streets proposal to be incorporated to the town comprehensive plan.

Complete Streets is a national and state program of grants and standards aimed at making streets safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and others of all ages and abilities, and making it easier to cross streets, shop, and use a bike.
