Canton woman re-elected as director of state Fireman's Association

CANTON -- Laurie Hance of Canton, a 27-year veteran of the fire service, was recently re-elected as director of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) at the group’s 146th Annual Convention in Liverpool.

Hance, the first-ever woman elected as director in 2013, will serve another five-year term.

She has been a member of the Hannawa Falls Fire Department for 27 years, where she has been special assistant chief for several years, and was treasurer for 17 years. She has also been a first responder and an EMT within the department.

Hance has received numerous awards from her department including the 1998 Outstanding Service Award, 1999 Chief’s Award, 2001 EMS Award, 2005 Chief’s Award, and was the 2010 Firefighter of the Year.

She is a life member of the Northern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, serving on numerous committees. She has been treasurer of the St. Lawrence County Chiefs’ Association for the past four years and has also been treasurer for the non-profit Believe Northern New York, a cancer support program for firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

She is also a member of the NYS Fire Police Association and secretary of the Association of Fire Police of St. Lawrence County.

Hance has been a member of FASNY for more than 15 years and has served as chair of the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Committee and on the Membership Committee.

Locally, Hance has worked for the Town of Pierrepont for 27 years. She is an administrative assistant to the Pierrepont Town Court and the town supervisor, and serves as the local government budget officer.

Hance is certified with the NYS Office of Court Administration and the NYS Department of Criminal Justice. She is a member of St. Lawrence County Municipal Clerk’s Association and St. Lawrence County Magistrate’s Association as well as the NYS Court Clerk’s Association.

Hance lives in Canton with her husband, M. Wayne Hance. They have two children, Paula and Angela.
