CANTON – A Canton woman was jailed on $20,000 bail after police found a “severely malnourished” five-year-old in her care.

Shelly R. Shirley, 44, was charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Anthony J. Gladle, 32, of Canton, was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Acting on an anonymous complaint made to the St. Lawrence County Child Protective Services, state police investigated the residence to check on the child. The boy was found to be severely malnourished and required immediate medical attention.

The child continues to recover and is in the care of St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services.

Massena-based state police say the incident remains under investigation, it is unclear of additional arrests or charges will be made.

Gladle was released on an appearance ticket and was scheduled to appear in the Town of Waddington Court at a later date.

Shirley was sent to St Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $20,000 dollars cash or $40,000 bond.

Shirley is scheduled to appear in the Town of Waddington Court on March 4.
