CANTON -- The village Board of Trustees is taking its time developing its rental property registry.

“It’s a work in progress,” said Mayor Michael Dalton. “We’re trying to decide what’s right for this community.”

The board discussed progress at its meeting Oct. 17.

In its effort to develop the database of rental properties, their owners and managers, the village is studying what other communities have done.

“We’re trying to be proactive with regulations and issues related to rental properties. We’re always looking to improve communication between landlords and the Village of Canton,” Dalton said. “

“We will have real information if a problem is found – not just from a code perspective but also from an emergency services perspective.”

Once they feel they have “a good solid draft” document to work with, they will schedule a public forum to get more input on the matter.

“We want it right,” Dalton said.
