CANTON -- A tussle at the end of Thursday evening's boys' lacrosse game between St. Lawrence Central and Canton high schools resulted in a one-game suspension of three players from each team.
No one was hurt and it was over in three minutes, according to Canton Central School Superintendent Bill Gregory, who was not there but who got a report from another school superintendent, not from either of the contesting schools, who was there.
Canton prevailed 9-8. The game was close, with both teams scoring late in the game, so emotions were probably high.
The scuffle began just as the final whistle blew, Gregory said.
“Credit goes to the officials and coaches for separating the kids and not allowing it to get worse. Fortunately several other responsible adults helped the officials and four coaches and didn’t contribute to the problem,” Gregory said. “It was addressed appropriately.
“It blighted an otherwise great contest between the two schools.”
The six players suspended will sit out Saturday games, a non-league contest with Canton and Lafayette and a contest between St. Lawrence Central and Saranac Lake.
In addition, Gregory noted, a game scheduled for Monday between the same two teams was declared a “no-contest” by Section 10 officials.
