Canton Central School Superintendent Bill Gregory had second thoughts about his decision to send buses on their way Monday morning and the weather deteriorated into snow squalls.
In a note to faculty and the school board Monday, now being sent to parents, Gregory said he now wishes he had called for a delay instead.
“This morning at 5:30 a.m. when I made the decision to dispatch the buses on schedule, even a delay did not seem necessary. Unfortunately, conditions rapidly deteriorated after I had made the decision,” Gregory wrote.
“As you can imagine, once the buses are ‘launched’ it is virtually impossible to recall them. In retrospect, it would have been wiser for me to have called for a delay to further assess the situation, particularly in light of the variable weather forecasts we have received of late.”
Fortunately, Gregory noted, “all of our buses arrived safely.”
“I assure you it is never my intent to place anyone at risk. I will do my best to ensure that this does not happen again,” Gregory said.
