Canton school board okays appointments, resignations, leaves of absence

CANTON – The Canton Central School Board of Education on Feb. 14 approved several resignations, appointments and leaves of absence at their school board meeting.

The board approved the resignation of Dylan Morrison from the position of varsity wrestling coach, effective Jan. 6.

Leaves of absence were approved as follows: Connie Bessette, unpaid leave family medical leave, from the position of teaching assistant, effective retroactively to Jan. 28, 2019 through on or about April 1, 2019, some of which qualifies under the Family Medical Leave Act (extension to the leave that was approved at the January 10, 2019 Board meeting; Eric Bush, paid/unpaid medical leave, from the position of bus driver, retroactive to Jan. 19, 2019 through March 1, 2019; Monica Smith, unpaid medical leave, from the position of food service helper, retroactive to Jan. 28, 2019 through March 17, 2019 (extension to the leave that was approved at the December 6, 2018 meeting and Thomas Van de Water, unpaid leave, from the position of secondary science teacher, for the 2019-20 school year, effective Sept. 1, 2019 through Aug. 31, 2020.

The school board approved the following appointments: Matthew Mende, teacher aide, per needs of the student, effective Feb. 25, 2019, at a prorated salary of $15,500 (Step 1) and Linda Smith, long-term substitute for teaching assistant, Connie Bessette, retroactive to Jan. 28, 2019 through on or about April 1, 2019, at a rate of $11.10 per hour for the first ten days (to be paid $112 per day retroactive to the first of ten consecutive days, which does not include days when school is not in session (extension to the appointment that was approved at the Jan. 10, 2019 meeting).

The following actions were approved for CCS wrestling: Michael Haycook, from the position of unpaid assistant modified and varsity wrestling coach to varsity wrestling coach 3 years/step 3, effective Jan. 7, 2019, at a prorated stipend of $5,021; Dylan Morrison, unpaid assistant varsity wrestling coach for remainder of the 2018-19 season, 2 years/step 2.

Coaches for spring 2019 season include: Mark Mende, modified baseball coach 17 years/step 5at a stipend of $2,604; Michael Wentworth, unpaid assistant (all levels) baseball and softball coach, 27 years/step 5; Matthew Randi, unpaid assistant boys modified lacrosse coach, 4 years/step 3; Murphy Newman, girls varsity lacrosse coach, 2 years/step 2, at a stipend of $3,824 and Jeffrey Meyers, girls modified lacrosse coach, 2 years/step 2, at a stipend of $1,912.

Also approved were: Anita Francis, JV softball coach, 11 years/step 5 at a stipend of $3,906; Carla Wentworth, modified softball coach, 9 years/step 5 at a stipend of $2,604; John Taillon, unpaid assistant varsity softball Coach, 12 years/step 5; Donald Brown, varsity/modified golf coach, 6 years/step 4 at a stipend of $3,946; William Porter, girls varsity track coach, 25 years/step 5 at a stipend of $5,208; Gregory Kiah, boys varsity track coach, 4 years/step 3 at a stipend of $4,301 and Agnes Toth, modified boys and girls track coach, 12years/step 5 at a stipend of $2,604.
