CANTON – The Canton Recreation Department has set its schedule of activities, events and trips for this summer, mostly for young people on summer vacation from school, with some opportunities for adults, too.

Among new additions to the schedule this year are a canoe-building workshop, baseball and golf clinics, choral singing class, a beginning magic course and a magic show, a sportsmen’s show in Aug., and summer theater workshops for different age groups.

Registration for all summer programs at the Canton Pavilion are on Saturday, June 4. Canton Central, St. Mary’s, and Little River School District residents register from 9 to 10 a.m., and non-district residents from 10 to 11 a.m.

There are fees for many of these programs. There will be no refunds unless the session is cancelled.

Activities:

• Adult Volleyball, Tuesdays June 14-Aug. 16, 5:30 p.m., Taylor Park Community Beach, weather permitting, fun-filled evenings of pick-up volleyball. No fee.

• Pick-up Field Lacrosse, Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 14- July 28, 6:30 p.m., Canton High School. Anyone grades 9 and up welcome. No Fee.

• Junior Golf Clinic June 27-30, 9-11 a.m., Partridge Run Golf Course. Golf pro Kevin Maginn teaches the first 40 people ages 7-11 who register. For more information call Kevin, 386-4444. $25 per/person.

• Come Dance With Me, June 27-30, 9 a.m., Riley Community Room, Canton Pavilion. Dance workshop for students now in grades 1-6. Introduction to tap, stomp, hip-hop, ballet technique, lyrical and multiple jazz styles; for anyone who loves to dance. No experience required. $25.

• Fine Arts Workshop, June 27-30, Riley Community Room at Canton Pavilion. Two classes, 6-7 p.m. for ages 7-9 and 7-8 p.m. for ages 10-13. Each class limited to the first 15 registrants. Laura Murphy, certified K-12 art teacher, works with young artists to integrate art history with foundational technique, experiment with a variety of mediums for artistic expression: clay sculpture, charcoal drawing, mosaic design, relief printmaking, watercolor painting. $25.

• Adventures in Learning, for kids ages 4-9 on or before July 1; Monday through Friday, July 5-Aug. 5, 8-10 a.m. at Billmeyer Playground, Canton Central School. Rain site Riley Community Room at Canton Pavilion. Field trips, show and tell, guest speakers, games, daily craft projects. No registration or fee; partially funded by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services through the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau.

• Beginner Tennis Clinic July 5-8, 6 p.m., SLU tennis courts off Miner Street. A beginner level program for anyone interested in learning the game of tennis or refining his/her strokes. $25 per.

• Red Cross Swimming Lessons, July 11-Aug. 4 at the Canton Central School pool. Tiny Tots through level 6. Levels 1-2, M,W at 8, 9, 10 a.m.; Levels 3-4, T,TH at 8, 9 a.m.; Levels 5-6, T,TH 10 a.m.; Tiny Tots, T,TH 10 a.m.

Level 1 participants must be 5 years old on or before July 1. Tiny Tots must be 4 years old on or before July 1. Birth Certificates required for proof of age at registration. Registration Fees: Canton Central, St. Mary’s & Little River School District residents: $35. Non-district residents: $45.

• Baseball Clinic July 11-15, 9-11 a.m. Ike Noble Fields on State Street Road. Baseball fundamentals clinic for children entering grades 3-8. On the last day, pitch, hit & run competition. $25.

• Canoe/Kayak Clinic July 11-14, 5:30 p.m., Taylor Park Community Beach. Rushton Canoe Weekend Chairman Chuck Bolesh presents proper techniques; paddle on the Grasse River. Some boats and equipment may be available for use. If you have one, bring own canoe or kayak. $25.

• Box Lacrosse June 27-July 27, 4-8 p.m. Monday & Wednesday evenings at the Canton Pavilion. There will be 4 teams in each division for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. Games will be played between 4 and 8 p.m. $25.

•Summer Theatre I July 11-22 Canton H.S. auditorium, 6 p.m., for grades 8-12. The students, with their director, stage a “showcase of talent.” The production will be a variety show held on the last evening. $25.

• Beginning Tumbling July 18-21, Banford School Gymnasium. Choice of 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. class; any child age 4 & up who would like to learn beginning gymnastics skills. Participants must be at least age 4, on or before July 1. Space is limited. $25.

• Summer Song Birds July 18-21 6 p.m., for ages 9-12. Riley Community Room at Canton Pavilion. Develop your singing talents, enjoy singing in a choral context exploring the wonder of harmony, and learning vocal exercises and basic note reading skills. $25.

• Summer Theatre II July 25-Aug. 5, 6 p.m., Canton Central auditorium; a 2-week experience for any child entering grades 4-7. Campers learn all aspects of putting on a production: acting, set design, backstage crew, etc. On the last night, campers perform a one-act play for the public. $25.

• Beginning Guitar Lessons July 25-28, 6 p.m. Riley Community Room at Canton Pavilion. Learn basic chords, strums and finger picking. Ages 11- 14. Must have own guitar. $25.

• Lifeguard Training Class July 25-29, noon, Canton Central Pool. For anyone age 15 and over who wants to become a certified lifeguard. $200 fee includes books, CPR mask, and certifications.

• Beginning Magic Aug. 2 & 4, 6 p.m., Riley Community Room. Bedazzle your friends with magic. Professional magician Richard Tenace will teach sleight of hand, card, rope tricks and more. $25.

Events and Trips:

• Pickle Ball Demo June 7 & 9, 6:30 p.m., Priest Field Tennis Courts off Judson Street. Come and learn the game of Pickle Ball, a combination of tennis and badminton played with paddles and a whiffle ball. This activity is for children and adults. The courts will be available to play every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Free.

• Bike Rodeo June 11, Canton Pavilion 10 a.m.; in conjunction with the Safe Routes to School Program and is for grades pre-K-4. Free.

• Baseball Trip to Toronto to see the New York Yankees, July 16. Bus leaves Canton Pavilion at 7:30 a.m. and returns at about 8:30 p.m. $95 per person includes coach transportation and ticket to ball game. The border crossing requirement for children is a birth certificate. For adults, a passport or enhanced driver’s license, or a driver’s license plus a birth certificate. • Story Walk July 30, Bend in River Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free family event combines wonderful children’s books with the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors.

• 5th Annual Mama Sergi Walk/Run July 31, Remington Recreation Trail at Partridge Run. Registration 8:30 a.m.; event starts 9 a.m.

• Canoe Building July 31-Aug. 6, Canton Pavilion, time TBA. One-week family or individual activity, build your own 14 lb. canoe. You will need to bring your own basic carpentry set. Canoe kit and instruction $500 per boat.

• The Magic Ace Magic Show, Aug. 6, Canton Pavilion, 7 p.m. If you are looking for family fun, clean comedy, magical surprises, come and see Richard Tenace, who has been performing his brand of family entertainment for over 20 years throughout the United States. $10 adults, $5 children, family rate $25.

• 5th Annual Canton Chamber of Commerce Community Sale, Aug. 13, Canton Pavilion. For more information, contact the Chamber office at 386-8255.
