Canton, Potsdam colleges working on recycling and reuse program for end-of-year 'leftovers'

SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton are working together on a recycling and reuse program called the “College Move Out Week.”

At the end of the spring semester, the volume of waste that is sent to landfills by college communities historically skyrockets.

The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of recyclable and reusable goods entering landfills, and instead, to donate those goods to local and state-wide charities. The St. Lawrence County Planning Office is assisting by providing logistical support and outreach to students.

The colleges all have unique, independent Move Out Week programs on their campus to collect items from students. Collected items include: clothing, linens, household goods, furniture, food, small appliances, and electronics.

Last year, 6 roll-off containers - approximately 3,000 cubic feet - of reusable goods were collected and donated to charities including The Rescue Mission, Helping Hands, and the C.O.R.C. Store.

Helping Hands in Hannawa Falls distributes food, furniture and household items in St. Lawrence County. The C.O.R.C. Store in Potsdam focuses on textile goods like clothing, blankets, and linens.

They work together with other charities and church groups in our area to ensure that low-income families get the clothes and household goods they need, the county planning office said.

The Rescue Mission has facilities in Syracuse, Auburn, Binghamton, and Ithaca. They provide emergency shelter, hot meals every day, employment and educational services.
