MASSENA -- A Canton man is facing reckless and impaired driving offenses for allegedly driving recklessly down state Route 310 on Tuesday, nearly causing several accidents and being apprehended in Massena, allegedly in possession of drugs and needles.
Mathieu J. Wood, 31, of 145 Pike St. is charged with two counts each of driving while ability impaired and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He is also charged with one count each of reckless driving and criminal possession of a hypodermic needle.
Police received complaints that Wood was driving recklessly on state Route 310.
"He almost rear-ended a vehicle, ran vehicles off the roadway," according to village police Sgt. Adam Love. "It started from (Route) 310 and we got him in the village."
When Wood was arrested, he allegedly had four tablets of buprenorphine hydrochloride, which is marketed under the brand name Suboxone, and three-and-a-half tablets of Xanax and a hypodermic needle. Suboxone is prescribed to treat opiate addiction and Xanax is prescribed to treat anxiety disorders.
Love said police were assisted by a drug recognition expert from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's office, which allowed them to level the impaired driving charges. They are awaiting the results of a blood test to determine exactly what was in his system.
