POTSDAM – A Canton man has been charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident after striking a utility pole, according to state police.
Police charged William A. Stone, 19, with aggravated driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to stop at a stop sign following the incident that took place at approximately 8:48 p.m. Sunday.
Stone failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling east in a 2000 Ford F-350 pickup on the Wilkinson Road when he struck the utility pole while trying to turn left onto the Ames Road, police said.
Witnesses followed him into the Town of Canton where he was stopped on Judson Street Road by state police.
Police said his blood alcohol content level was .21 percent, nearly three times the .08 percent threshold for DWI.
Stone, along with Christopher B. Knight, 19, Canton, and Michael D. Witherhead, 19, Canton, passengers in Stone’s vehicle, was also charged with consuming an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
All three are to face the charges in Canton Town Court on Sept. 14.
