CANTON – Village Superintendent Brien Hallahan says the Board of Trustees has approved plans for paving work by the Department of Public Works that include reconstruction of about 5,000 feet of roads.
His crews will soon begin milling and repaving about 1,100 feet of Prospect Street, then move to Buck Street, rebuilding about 2,800 feet there, and then it’s on to Pine Street and rebuilding about 1,000 feet.
In addition to the milling, the crews will also be fixing any drainage structures along the roads that need it before paving.
Hallahan confirmed what other superintendents have said about asphalt being cheaper at the beginning of the season.
“Every year, during the first month asphalt is as cheap as it’s going to get,” he said.
Right now the price is around $35 a ton.
Later in the season his department will put an asphalt overlay on two sections of the Remington Recreation Trail. Over the last few years the project has been divided into sixths, and he expects to finish it, repaving the fifth and sixth sections, before the end of the year.
In addition, the village has received a grant to make improvements to Bend in the River Park. They will be repaving the asphalt path.
And when those are done, there “a lot of other smaller projects” that will get attention from the department this year.
