CANTON -- Village trustees agreed this week to move forward on a “rental review” that will require landlords to register their properties with the village.

The trustees also plan to take a look at the latest version of the rental review at their August meeting, with a hearing on it set for just before the regular September meeting.

The idea of the rental registry is to have a record of who owns or is responsible for rental properties in the village, to assure better accountability by their owners and managers and to facilitate regular housing inspections.

“In some areas you just don’t know what’s being rented,” Mayor Dalton said.

He said the latest version of the registry plan should be ready for the August meeting and will be available before the hearing in September.

In the meantime, Dalton said, people may voice their concerns and questions to him or any trustee.
