CANTON – If they can maintain their position in an online voting contest, the Canton Church and Community Program stands to win $20,000 in a national $1.5 million food pantry holiday makeover campaign.
The deadline to vote through Wal-Mart is Friday.
The Church and Community Program, 7 Main St., is sitting in 65th place with 1,031 votes. First place Chesapeake Cares Food Pantry has tallied 7,458 and Hope For the Community has 1,013 in 75th place.
The money would be used to update their facility.
“The top 75 pantries receiving votes will receive $20,000,” said Raymond Crosby, program director.
Anyone can vote using social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Each person can vote once per 24 hours.
The non-profit program provides food, clothing and provides various forms of assistance to people in need.
Winners will be announced Dec. 15.
Walmart is donating a total of $1.5 million that will be divided up between the 75 pantries with the most votes.
