Canton Central School names Class of 2018 leaders

CANTON -- Canton Central School has named 10 academic class leaders for the class of 2018.

Those being honored include Katharine Hebb, Noah Goldie, Hunter Dean, Brianna Larrabee, Abigail Warner, John Bailey, Hailey Newman, Elisa Sergi, Elizabeth Christy and Ticia Yerdon.

John Bailey is the son of John and Judy Bailey, 165 Nickerson Road, Canton. John has been on the high honor roll for all four years of high school while taking several AP and honors courses and two college courses at St. Lawrence University. He played JV and varsity soccer and baseball and was a member of the indoor track team, receiving several Academic All-Northern awards. Outside of school, John is a member of the local Knights of Columbus council. He has also held two part-time jobs for several years at Price Chopper and Josie’s Pizzeria. John has received an Army ROTC scholarship and will be attending Clarkson University in the fall where he plans to study engineering.

Elizabeth Christy is the daughter of Richard and Mindy Christy, Ames Road, Canton. Over the course of her four years at Hugh C. Williams Senior High School, Lizzy has been a high honor roll student, taken five AP courses, and has been named an AP Scholar. She received the Academic Excellence Scholarship and was a state finalist for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship. Lizzy also took Calculus I and Brain and Behavior at St. Lawrence University these past fall and spring semesters. Lizzy played hockey, soccer, and lacrosse throughout high school, receiving Academic All-Northern every season, as well as Second Team All-Northern in all three sports. On these teams she has been a part of winning four Section X Championships. She also played club hockey with the Potsdam Ice Storm and St. Lawrence Steel, winning two

State Championships and advancing to the National Tournament where her team placed third and fifth in the nation. Lizzy is a two year member of National Honor Society, through which she spends time tutoring 8th grade students and volunteering at the school blood drives. Lizzy will be attending the University of New Hampshire this fall in the honors program as an undecided major, but she is considering pursuing mathematics or neuroscience.

Hunter Dean is the son of Scott and Jennifer Dean, and brother of Ryan, all of whom reside in Canton. Throughout high school, Hunter has been an All-Northern cross country runner and has been a member of the National Honor Society. For the last five years, Hunter has been assisting his mother to organize “Ride to Breathe”, a ride that raises money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. The ride was started in 2004 after the death of his sister Bethany, and this is one of the reasons why Hunter would like to build his career in the medical field. Hunter plans on attending St. Lawrence University in the fall, majoring in biochemistry and pursuing a career in medical research.

Katharine Hebb is the daughter of Katrina and Ken Hebb, Canton. Throughout high school she has participated in Speech and Debate and the GSA club. She was the treasurer for the Environmental Club, a member of National Honor Society, and a member of her church youth group. As an activist she has participated in several marches, including the Women's March on Washington in 2016. Additionally, she was a member of the swim team at Edwards-Knox, and ran cross country and track all three seasons of her two years at Canton. After graduation she plans to attend college at SUNY Stony Brook to major in neuroscience.

Noah Goldie is the son of Scott and Carol Goldie of 1062 Farnes Road, Canton. Noah has participated in Concert Band, Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble during his four years of his high school, playing trumpet as his primary instrument. Additionally, he taught himself to play keyboards while taking Music Alternatives and was selected to play in the pit band for the 2017 spring musical. He has also participated in many NYSSMA solos and regional bands, and was selected for the New York State Band Directors Association Honors Concert Band.

Noah also participated in the American Mathematics Competition and the Pi Mu Epsilon Math Competition, placing second overall. He attended the Youth Climate Summit at the Wild Center, and the Envirothon at Paul Smith’s College. He went to France in 2014 as part of the French Exchange, where he spent two weeks living with a family and visiting cultural sites. During summer of 2016, Noah attended computer camp at Villanova College in Pennsylvania, where he spent a week coding a game.

Noah has maintained high honor roll since 7th grade while participating in various athletic pursuits. He participated in track and field for four years and played hockey with the Canton Minor Hockey Association. This fall, Noah will be majoring in Applied Mathematics at RIT.

Brianna Larrabee is the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Larrabee of Canton. An Advanced Placement Scholar, Brianna Larrabee is heavily involved in sports, music, student government, and theatre in her school. Brianna is the president of her class, treasurer of the Thespians Troupe 259, and an active member in Student Council and National Honor Society. She was a captain on her soccer team and received Academic All-Northern Honors, First-Team All-Northern Honors, Section X Defensive MVP, a Section Ten Champion Title, Central League Champion Titles, and was selected as part of the girls’ First-Team All-North Soccer Team.

Brianna also received Academic All-Northern in track and lacrosse. Brianna actively participated in the Arts as a singer in Canton’s Vocal Jazz and Select Choir Groups, participated in All-County Vocal Jazz and was a soloist in Canton's Jazz Night. She portrayed several lead roles in musicals, her favorite being Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, and was involved with stage, lighting, and makeup crews.

As a sophomore, Brianna was an Ambassador at the Central New York HOBY Leadership Conference, was selected to return as a Junior Facilitator, and will join a student leadership team when she attends for her third year in June.

Brianna will be attending St. Lawrence University in the fall as a Momentum Scholar eager to explore her academic options and study overseas. She intends to include soccer, singing, acting, and math in her future. She is excited for the opportunities she will pursue at the collegiate level.

Haley Newman is the daughter of Kathleen Duffany and Gene Newman of 468 Pink School Road, Canton.

During her high school career she has actively engaged herself in her community. Over the summers she volunteered at the Church and Community Program and the Canton Free Library and participated in engineering camps at Clarkson. In school, Haley was a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Thespians, and volunteered as a tutor. Her freshman and sophomore years she played clarinet in band, and for eight years she took private piano lessons at St. Lawrence.

Throughout high school she has participated in Project Challenge at Clarkson University and enrichment programs at St. Lawrence University. For the past year, Haley has been a cashier at the Canton American Theater. Her sophomore year she took part in the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference. Haley will be attending Union College with a Women and Gender Studies Major, and hopes to become active in their beekeeping club. Her interests include woodworking, weightlifting, and dogs.

Elisa Sergi is the daughter of Pat and Rosa Sergi, 6445 County Route 27, Canton. Over the past four years Elisa has earned high honor roll status while keeping busy with extra-curricular activities. She is the president of Canton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, secretary of her class, Student Council vice-president, yearbook treasurer, and a member of the Whiz Quiz team. She has also played three years of varsity volleyball and served as captain during her senior season.

From a young age Elisa has enjoyed working at her family's restaurant, which is where she can be found most weekends, working alongside her family. She is a middle school tutor as well as an active member of her church community. She has taken four AP courses and during her senior year completed Calculus I and II at St. Lawrence University. Elisa has received the Evergreen STEM scholarship which will aid her as she attends St. Lawrence University in the fall. She will be majoring in mathematics with a minor in education. She looks forward to one day becoming a teacher as her teachers have made a strong impact on her life, and she hopes one day to be able to do the same.

Abigail Warner is the daughter of Janet and Dave Warner, 30 Woods Drive, Canton. Throughout high school Abby has been on the high honor roll, is an AP Scholar, and has received Academic All-Northern for all sports seasons.

She has played soccer, lacrosse, and hockey each year of high school. Her teams have won Section X Championships twice for lacrosse and once for hockey. Outside of school, Abby played on the North Country Ice Storm Hockey Team, which went to states in 2016, and played soccer for FC Freeze. Abby regularly attends class meetings and is active in her class. She helped publish the yearbook in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Abby is a member of the National Honor Society. Her senior year she served as the Public Relations officer for NHS where she wrote press releases about the various community service activities, and also co-coordinated two Red Cross Blood Drives at the high school.

Abby took Calculus I and Introduction to Environmental Studies at St. Lawrence University during her senior year. She works as a lifeguard in the summer at Taylor Park Beach. After graduation she will be attending the University of Rhode Island to study biology and will continue on in the field of dentistry.

Ticia Yerdon is the daughter of Bonnie Brothers and Joseph Yerdon of Canton, NY. Ticia has participated in many extracurricular activities while keeping a high academic standing. She has been on the volleyball team since sophomore year, assuming the position as captain her senior year and receiving Academic All- Northern and Second Team All-Northern awards.

Ticia was also the captain of the varsity softball team where she also received an award for Academic All-Northern, and she was a member of the indoor track team her senior year. Ticia is a member of the National Honor Society and Thespians. She is treasurer for the volleyball and softball teams, the Spanish Club, and the Class of 2018. Not only does she participate in all of these activities, but she also works on her uncle’s farm as a farm hand, works as a part-time babysitter, and is a ticket-taker for varsity sport games through all seasons. In her school work Ticia challenges herself by taking more rigorous courses.

These would include Honors English 9 and 10, AP European History, AP United States History, AP Language and Composition, and AP Government and Politics. She has also participated in SLUSEP and Project Challenge for extra academic knowledge. This year Ticia is taking Allied Health at Seaway Tech to prepare her for college course work and possibly provide her with 7.5 college credits. Ticia will be attending SUNY Brockport this fall for a nursing degree.
