Cape Vincent Town Board member John L. Byrne III won the Republican primary for the 116th state Assembly district by an almost a two-to-one margin Tuesday.
Byrne, a small business owner, beat John S. Humphrey, a retired Department of Defense weapons inspector who operates a soybean farm and horse farm in Brownville, 2,220-1,025. Another 172 write-in votes were cast.
Byrne and Humphrey were both seeking to be the GOP candidate in the November elections against incumbent Democrat Addie Russell of Theresa, who will be seeking her fourth term.
Also known as the “River District,” the 116th includes Canton, Ogdensburg, Massena, Potsdam, Lisbon Morristown, Depeyster, Hammond, Louisville, Oswegatchie, Rossie and Waddington as well as much of northern Jefferson County.
Russell Finley of Lisbon was also on the ballot seeking the Conservative party nod. However, he received 65 votes, compared with 72 write-ins for Conservative candidate. Although not a Republican party candidate, Finley filed a “petition to ballot” prior to the primary, which allows registered Republicans to write in candidates.
The results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots or write-ins, according to elections officials.
