Brits leave Waddington as reigning Carp Angling World Champions

WADDINGTON -- An English duo walked away with the Carp Angling World Championship cup after defeating nearly 60 other teams from 16 countries and 14 U.S. states during the recent 115-hour battle on the St. Lawrence River.

Lee Jackson and Ian Chillcott representing Team Carp World of Angling Publications landed 122 fish totaling 1857 lbs. 3 oz. at the newly developed fishing site near Massena.

When asked about the event, champion Lee Jackson said, “It was the maddest swim I've ever fished in."

It was only the second time in history that a competitive world-class professional-level carp fishing event such as the CAWC has be held in North America.

Anglers representing Canada, the Channel Islands, Greece, the Czech Republic, England, Jersey, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, the Ukraine and the United States participated in the international endurance contest along a 35-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena.

A total of 1,472 common carp were caught and released totaling 25,346 lbs. 04 oz.

Champion Ian Chillcott best summed up his experience on the St. Lawrence saying, "If fishing is an escape, then carp fishing is the great escape."

40-pounder

With a reputation for large fighting fish, the St. Lawrence River rewarded Carp Angling World Championship participant Pavel Hastik of the Czech Republic with a beautiful common weighing just one ounce shy of forty pounds. Hastik - a well-known and talented pro-circuit angler – banked the beauty at a peg in Ogdensburg on the fourth day of the tournament.

Hastik and partner Petr Mikulicka also took the Big Fish of the Day on day 2 with a 32 lb. 14 oz. fish, garnering the duo a quadruple play winning twice the Walmart Big Fish of the Day prizes plus the overall Big Fish of the tournament and the Big Four total weight prizes.

Ray Scott impressed

BASS founder, Ray Scott walks among the fishing gods, and he walked among the world’s best carp anglers during the Carp Angling World Championship the last week of September.

Scott said he was amazed by the level of expertise and technical aspects of carp angling that the contestants exhibited when he visited their swims each day of the contest. Comparing bass tournaments to carp tournaments, he noted that he was intrigued and tips his hat to the organizers for the amount of detail and behind the scenes logistics that occur.
