BRASHER -- The Brasher Beavers women's hockey team recently recognized Scott Smalling and the staff at Cheel Arena for hosting the first four years of "Droppin' the Gloves on Cancer" hockey tournament. The events have raised thousands of dollars support of gynecological and breast cancer initiatives for North Country women, a statement from the Beavers says.

"Mr. Smalling was in on the ground floor with planning for this tournament. He and his staff were exemplary to work with. The teams enjoyed the experience of playing at Cheel many saying it's the best tournament they have ever participated in. Mr. Smalling was a driving force behind making this tournament what it is today." Beaver goalie and tournament director Julia Rose said.

The Brasher Beavers started "Droppin' the Gloves on Cancer" in partnership with the Massena Memorial Hospital Foundation. Many team members have loved ones affected by various forms of cancer, the team says.

Proceeds are divided between Massena Memorial Hospital and the Canton-Potsdam Cancer Center. As the tournament enters it's sixth year, it has generated more than $44,000.

This year's tournament will again be hosted at the Tri-Town Community Center in Brasher Falls with divisions for Women "B", Women "C" and Co-Ed teams.

For more information on the tournament, contact the MMH Foundation at 769-4602 or jrose@massenahospital.org.
