OGDENSBURG -- A decomposed body found Monday off of the Maple City Trail is that of St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center patient Donald Copeman, who was reported missing Sept. 21, according to Ogdensburg City Police.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious, however a final ruling is pending toxicology results. It could take several weeks to get those results,” said Det. Sgt. Robert Wescott.

He said the body had photo ID but was decomposed to a degree that identification was only possible through dental records, Wescott said.

Copeman had last been seen by a psych center staff member getting into a taxi on Sept. 19 at about 9:45 a.m.

He failed to return as expected later that day, and was reported missing to the Ogdensburg Police Department on Sept. 21.

In the first few days, police received tips that Copeman may have been in the Gouverneur area.

On September 26, a tip pointed police to an area off the end of Maple City Trail, where investigators found some of Copeman’s personal effects Westcott said.

“Officers began concentrating their efforts and conducting several searches of the area, to include having divers search the Oswegatchie River, along the shoreline,” Westcott said. “Due to the terrain, many areas were difficult to access on foot.”

On Monday, the New York State Police’s Aviation Unit, stationed in Lake Clear, assisted in the investigation. The pilot found the body in the swamp, off the trail and directed officers in on foot.

Westcott said in addition city and state police, assisting agencies included Gouverneur Village Police, Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, Ogdensburg Fire Department and the Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation Department.
