MASSENA -- The Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved hiring the second female village police officer in Massena history.
The board voted to hire Kathryn E. Burnham at a starting rate of $16.95 per hour.
Chief Adam Love said she is a Massena resident who is working part-time with the Norwood Police Department as she finishes training at the Sullivan Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton.
"This will give us diversity in the streets and fill a void in not having a female officer for years," Love said at the meeting.
In other news, the board at the same meeting approved hiring Mark W. Englert as a part-time Massena court security officer. He recently retired from the Massena Police Department as a sergeant.
Love said they have been having trouble finding time for full-time officers to police the court, a task he described as "necessary."
"I don't have availability downstairs to put guys upstairs because it's so busy," the chief told the board. The police station is on the bottom floor of the town hall, and the court is on the top floor.
