Barn quilt celebration to be held in Colton July 17

COLTON -- The town of Colton will hold a Barn Quilt Celebration on Tuesday, July 17 from noon to 4pm during its upcoming Colton Country Days festivities from July 15-22.

The celebration will be held at Dale Rexford’s place at 65 East Higley Road where 19 of the more than 100 barn quilts up around the town of Colton are displayed on one of his barns.

Dale has purchased some of the barn quilts from the town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee, purchased some from elsewhere, and has painted some on his own.

He also is a collector of vintage cars and quilts which will be displayed on July 17 for people also to see.

Planners hope the Barn Quilt Celebration will be a gathering of people from within the community and beyond who have attended classes offered by the committee, who have painted barn quilts on their own or with others, and who just love them and want to learn more about how to get involved in the barn quilt movement spreading all across the county, state, and country.

Refreshments will be available and a photo will be taken at 1:30 p.m. with those who have gathered.

A resource table will be set up with a variety of books and other materials, including an updated list and map of “Barn Quilts Around Town of Colton” to guide people in touring around on their own to see barn quilts in public and private places.

Attendees will have the opportunity to buy tickets for a Wild Goose in Cabin Barn Quilt being raffled during Colton Country Days in support of the project. The barn quilt measuring 2x2 feet was painted by Lauren Buckley who has been working with the committee for three years and just graduated from CPCS.

Tickets are $5 each; and only 100 tickets are available.

The winning ticket will be drawn on Saturday, July 21 at 3 p.m. at the Colton Museum where it will be displayed after the Barn Quilt Celebration.

The winner does not have to be present to win.

Since 2014 the town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee and the Colton-Pierrepont Central School (CPCS) Art Department have painted barn quilts and taught others to paint barn quilts as the centerpiece of an “Art Around Town” collaborative venture.

“Barn quilts connect well with committee’s focus on heritage tourism, draws attention to the local quilting tradition, and provides a wonderful opportunity for lots of people to get involved including CPCS students,” said Ruth McWilliams, who co-chairs the committee and helps lead the project.

The committee’s original goal was to get 30 barn quilts up in town in places where the public could see them on barns, garages, houses, fences, and municipal buildings. When that goal was quickly reached the committee sets its sights on having at least 100 barn quilts up by the upcoming Colton Country Days.

The Barn Quilt Celebration is just one of the many events planned for July 15-22 with traditional Colton Country Day activities taking place all day on July 21.

The complete schedule of activities from July 15-22 is available on the town website (www.townofcolton.com) and updates are posted on the Town of Colton page on Facebook.
