MASSENA -- A village resident is jailed following an early Sunday morning stabbing at the Rusty Wheel, Willow Street, where he allegedly attacked a man because he believed he was gay, according to documents filed with the court.

David A. Lawrence II, 26, of 101 Woodlawn Ave. is charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

According to court documents, he stabbed Eric Schuck in the left thigh with a butterfly knife, causing a laceration that was an inch wide and two inches deep.

Schuck told police the altercation started when Lawrence saw him talking to another man in the restroom, thought they were a homosexual couple and threatened violence.

The argument moved from the bar to the parking lot, where Lawrence allegedly stabbed Schuck.

Lawrence was charged with a felony for possessing the illegal knife. It was elevated from a misdemeanor because of a prior petit larceny conviction, according to documents filed with the court.

Lawrence was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald Sharlow and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton in lieu of $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.
