OGDENSBURG -- An attempted assault investigation lead to a man being jailed on a felony drug possession count and another jailed on an impersonation charge.

Michael R. “Mitch” Wentling, 33, of 104 Otto St., Syracuse is charged third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree attempted assault.

Dervon Q. McGee, 23, of 104 Auto St. is charged with misdemeanor second-degree criminal impersonation.

The case started early on Thursday when detectives responded to a report of an assault on Rensselaer Avenue. Upon arriving and speaking with the alleged victim, police arrested Wentling and charged him with misdemeanor attempted assualt. While taking him into custody, police say they found him in possession of 51 packaged bags of crack cocaine. Detectives say the drugs are worth about $5,000 on the street.

During the course of that investigation, officers say they questioned McGee, who gave them a name and birthdate but had no identification. Police said McGee gave them the false identity believing he was wanted in Syracuse. A records revealed he had no outstanding warrants, investigators said.

Ogdensburg police say they were assisted at the scene by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and the New York State Police.

Both were arraigned Thursday in Ogdensburg City Court by Judge Gary Alford.

Wentling was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, without bail.

McGee was remanded to the county lockup in lieu of $750 bail or $1,500 bond.
