All but three North Country state lawmakers earn failing grades on environmental activists' scorecard

All but three North Country state lawmakers earned failing scores on the EPL/Environmental Advocates “2016 Environmental Scorecard,”

The group says the rankings track all 213 state legislators’ voting records on environmental legislation.

“While the North Country is represented by some standouts like Assemblymembers Addie Russell and Carrie Woerner, unfortunately many of their colleagues don’t share their willingness to work together to find solutions on the environmental and public health challenges facing the region,” said Peter Iwanowicz, executive director of EPL/Environmental Advocates. “There appear to be too many area elected officials, from Congress on down, who are aboard the anti-science Trump train, including the entire Senate delegation.”

Russell, D-Theresa, earned 92 points, the group said.

Senators Elizabeth Little (R-Queensbury) and Joseph Griffo (R-Utica) once again all failed, earning 57 points, and Senator Patty Ritchie (R-Heuvelton) earned 62 points, according to EPL/Environmental Advocatres.

“Their scores were driven down by bad votes, such as supporting legislation that would effectively end the state’s participation in the innovative Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI),” the group said in a news release.

Retiring Assemblywoman Janet Duprey earned 71 points, making her the highest-performing Republican lawmaker in the delegation, while Assemblyman Marc Butler (R-Johnstown) earned an incomplete due to “too many missed votes,” the group said.

Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush, R-Black River, earned 60 points.

“The EPL/Environmental Advocates 2016 Environmental Scorecard is the first and only record of New York State lawmakers’ votes on legislation that will affect the environment. The guide has been produced and distributed statewide for more than 40 years,” according to the release.
