One of every five housing units in St. Lawrence County is vacant, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to 2010 Census figures released today, a total of 52,133 housing units existed in the county in 2010, but 10,528 of them are vacant. A total of 41,605 households were counted in 2010, compared to 40,506 in 2000.

Overall, St. Lawrence County gained 13 people during the past ten years, with total population standing at 111,944 in 2010, compared to 111,931 people in 2000.

Of the total, 105,064, or 93.8 percent, are white. Another 2,420 are African-American, 1,135 are American Indian, and 1,085 are Asian, the Census Bureau reported.

The tiny increase in population was somewhat of a surprise.

Just two weeks ago, the bureau released estimates for 2010, which predicted a loss of 1,791 people in St. Lawrence County in the past decade. The bureau provides updated population figures each year, but they are estimates, not actual counts.

Statewide, the Census reported New York City had 8,175,133 people in 2010; Buffalo, 261,310; Rochester, 210,565; Yonkers, 195,976; and Syracuse, 145,170.

New York City grew by 2.1 percent since the 2000 Census. Buffalo decreased by 10.7 percent, Rochester decreased by 4.2 percent, Yonkers decreased by 0.1 percent, and Syracuse decreased by 1.5 percent.
