St. Lawrence County won’t benefit from $1.3 million parks funding announced by Gov. Cuomo

No state parks in St. Lawrence County will benefit from $1.3 million aimed at improving and expanding state hiking trails and parks.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo says the funding will boost tourism to the targeted areas, which are largely downstate. He is the funding will also provide greater access to the State’s many outdoor recreational areas.

“These trails are pathways to the unparalleled natural beauty that exists in every corner of New York,” Governor Cuomo said. “With this funding, we will ensure they are remain well maintained and accessible for years to come and I encourage residents and visitors alike to take a trip and experience these natural treasures for themselves.”

Unfortunately, in St. Lawrence County where hiking trails and outdoor parks are abundant, funding has not been allocated for improvements.

Despite the lack of funding, St. Lawrence County planners and officials throughout the counties more than 30 municipalities are working on connecting existing trails, developing waterways, and improving outdoor recreation.

The county’s multi-use trail system is one such effort. The county aims to create new trails that connect with existing trails. These can be used for cycling, all-terrain vehicles and pedestrians.

Another major project is the Blueway trails along the Oswegatchie and Raquette Rivers. These water-based trails aim to improve tourism and expand access to the county’s rivers.

The governor's NY Parks 2020 program is a multi-year commitment to leverage $900 million in private and public funding for State Parks from 2011 to 2020. The 2016-17 State Budget allocates $90 million toward this initiative.
