The University of Rochester shot 58% from the field en route to a 79-55 win over the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team in its season opener at the Chuck Resler Tournament on Friday night.
"We did a lot of good things tonight," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger. "But we played a great team and didn't shoot well. I was proud of a few first-year students for stepping up. However, we need to keep working to get better."
St. Lawrence was led by sophomore Kara McDuffee's game-high 20 point performance, which was also her career high. First-year student Lauren Quattrocchi joined McDuffee in double figures for the Saints, as she contributed 12 points in her collegiate debut. Junior co-captain Cassie St. Hilaire and rookie Amanda Roberts also combined for 14 points.
Rochester, which took a 41-28 lead into half time, was led by Ally Zywicki's 17 points, while Loren Wagner, Breanna Madrazo and Paige Aleski each scored 10 points apiece for the Yellowjackets.
The Saints came to within eight points (46-38) early in the second half, but Zywicki hit a three-pointer to spark a 15-3 run that put the game out of reach, allowing the home team to cruise to the 79-55 victory.
The Saints will take on St. John Fisher tomorrow at 3:00pm in the second day of the Chuck Resler Tournament.
